Restaurant Loyalty Program: 10 Ideas and How to Run One
Ten restaurant loyalty program ideas, from visit stamps and slow-day rewards to regulars' tiers, with what each costs to run and how to put the card in your guests' Apple Wallet and Google Wallet.
A restaurant loyalty program gives guests a reason to come back: a free dish after a number of visits, points toward a reward, or perks for regulars. The programs that work are simple enough to explain at the table, cost the restaurant less than the visits they bring, and live somewhere the guest already looks, like the wallet on their phone.
Below are ten program ideas with how each one works, then how to run one with a card in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, what it costs, and how to tell whether it’s working.
Choose the program type first
Most restaurant programs are one of five types. Pick the one that matches how your guests already behave.
| Type | How guests earn | Suits | What the card shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visit stamps | One stamp per visit or per qualifying order | Cafes, lunch spots, quick service | “6 / 10 visits” |
| Spend points | Points per dollar spent | Full service, higher tickets | “340 points, reward at 500” |
| Tiers | Status after a number of visits or spend in a period | Places with a core of regulars | “Regular since March” |
| Paid membership | A monthly fee for a standing perk | Brunch, coffee, wine bars | “Member, 1 free brunch a month” |
| Occasion rewards | Birthdays, anniversaries, off-peak days | Any restaurant, alongside another type | “Birthday dessert this week” |
Visit stamps are the easiest to run and to understand. Points reward bigger orders but need a till that knows the spend. Tiers and memberships work once you already have regulars.
10 restaurant loyalty program ideas
1. Tenth meal free
The classic stamp card: one stamp per visit, the tenth meal (or the tenth main) free. Keep the reward generous enough to talk about and the count short enough to reach within a season. The card shows the count, and each new stamp can put “You have 7 of 10 stamps” on the guest’s lock screen.
2. Double stamps on slow days
Give double stamps on the day you’re quietest, and tell cardholders the morning of. A lock-screen message such as “Double stamps all day Tuesday” costs nothing to send and moves visits to the tables you need to fill.
3. Points per dollar with a clear reward
One point per dollar and a reward at a round number (a free main at 500 points) suits full-service restaurants where order sizes vary. Show the balance and the next reward on the card, so guests see how close they are.
4. Birthday reward
Ask for a birthday month at signup and put a dessert or a drink on the card that week. It’s a reason to book a table for a group, which is worth more than the dessert.
5. Weekday lunch club
A card for the office crowd: every fifth weekday lunch free, or a free coffee with lunch after three visits in a week. It rewards the pattern you want to keep and needs nothing more than a stamp count.
6. Regulars’ tier
After a set number of visits in three months, move the guest to a regulars’ tier with a standing perk: a first drink on the house, priority on the waitlist, or the chef’s special before it goes on the menu. The same card changes color and label when they qualify.
7. Bring a friend
Give each guest a referral code on their card and a reward when a new guest comes in with it. The new guest gets their own card at the table, so the program grows with every referral.
8. Order direct for takeout
Reward takeout ordered through your own website or phone line instead of delivery apps, with a stamp per direct order. The margin you keep on a direct order pays for the reward.
9. Paid membership
A monthly membership with a standing perk (one free brunch, a bottle at retail price, a set coffee allowance) brings predictable revenue from your best guests. The card shows the member’s status and renewal date, and marks the card lapsed if a payment fails.
10. Win back lapsed guests
When a guest hasn’t visited for two months, send an offer to their card: “We miss you. Your next dessert is on us.” It reaches the lock screen of someone who already chose to keep your card, which beats buying their attention again.
What a restaurant loyalty program costs
- Rewards: the cost of the free items, which you control with the stamp count or points threshold. Set the reward from your food cost, not the menu price.
- Tools: paper cards cost little but get lost and invite fake stamps. Loyalty apps charge a monthly fee and ask guests to download an app. A Wallet card costs a flat monthly fee and guests need nothing extra.
- Staff time: a few seconds per stamp at the counter, or none if the till adds stamps automatically.
On WalletWallet, the Free plan covers 1,000 passes a month (each new card and each update counts), and Pro is $39 a month for 100,000. A restaurant with 800 regular guests and a few thousand stamps a month runs on Pro for $39 in total.
How to run it with Apple Wallet and Google Wallet cards
- Design the card. Set your logo, colors, and fields in the visual editor: the stamp count or points on the front, the reward and your address on the back, and a QR code with the guest’s ID.
- Get guests on it. Put a QR code on the table tent, the receipt, or the menu. It opens the card’s page, which shows Add to Apple Wallet on iPhone and Save to Google Wallet on Android. To start with the guests you already know, upload their list as a CSV in Batch import.
- Add stamps. Staff find the guest’s card in the Pass Manager on a phone at
the counter and bump the count. To stamp automatically from your till, send
the update from a Zapier or n8n flow, or call the API:
PUT /api/passes/<serial>with the new count. - Tell the guest. Add a
changeMessagesuch as"You have %@ stamps"to the stamp field, and each update shows on their lock screen. For offers, see how to send a custom message to a Wallet pass. - Redeem the reward. When the guest reaches the reward, serve it and reset the count on the same card. The card stays in their wallet for the next round.
- Show up nearby. Add your restaurant’s address (up to 10 locations) and the card appears on the guest’s lock screen when they’re close.
The digital punch card and loyalty card pages show the same setup with live sample cards you can add to your phone.
How to tell it’s working
- Enrollment rate: cards added divided by covers served. A QR code on every table should reach a meaningful share of guests within a month.
- Repeat visit rate: how many cardholders came back within 30 and 60 days, compared with guests who didn’t join.
- Redemption rate: rewards redeemed against cards that reached the threshold. Very low redemption means the reward is too far away.
The Pass Manager shows how many devices installed each card and exports every card to CSV for this math.
Running cards for many restaurants
Loyalty platforms, POS resellers, and agencies run the same program for dozens of restaurants from one account. Each card carries its own restaurant’s name, logo, and color, and that name is what guests see on the lock screen. See white-label Wallet passes for platforms for the integration and pricing across merchants.
FAQ
Do guests need to download an app?
No. Apple Wallet and Google Wallet are built into every iPhone and Android phone. The guest scans the QR code, taps Add to Wallet, and the card sits next to their boarding passes.
Paper punch card or digital?
Paper is cheap to start but gets lost, can be stamped by anyone with a matching stamp, and can’t remind the guest to come back. A Wallet card can’t be lost, carries a unique code per guest, and can reach the lock screen with a stamp count or an offer.
Does it work with my POS?
Staff can stamp from the Pass Manager next to any till. To stamp automatically when a guest pays, connect your POS to the card through Zapier, n8n, or a direct API call.
How do I stop guests from sharing a card?
Each guest’s card has its own code, and the Apple Wallet share button is hidden by default, so the live card can’t be forwarded. Check the code at redemption and the reward goes to the guest who earned it.
What does a restaurant loyalty program cost to run?
The rewards you give, plus the tool. On WalletWallet, Free covers 1,000 passes a month and Pro is $39 a month flat for 100,000, with no per-guest fee.
To try it, create an account, design your card in the editor, and add it to your own phone before putting the QR code on a table.
Build, distribute, and notify in under five minutes
Design your passes, hand them out, and send push notifications to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. By API, from the dashboard, or through an AI assistant.
